That scene when Tom Rath first looks at Maria: the music evokes a depth
that suggests not only haunting beauty, but also the antiquity of Italy.
The piece after Tom's train companion makes a comment about the Brooklyn Dodgers
is both solemn and hilarious. Just to cite a few.

I watched The Man today, the day Maurice Jarre died... And I agree with you, great piece of work from Herrmann.

Not to mention some truly awful melodramatic music at the end of the film when Betsy runs away and drives around all night.

It's very "Herrmannesque," I'll grant you that. I didn't even have to look up who'd composed the score. His work is extremely recognizable.
