Ralph Hopkins/Tom Rath

domestic life is similar between March's character and Peck's character. Home issues and problems with the spouse are present. Another thing is Hopkins daughter in nightclubs (a celebrity) is like Paris Hilton (a celebrity). Just a thought.

Good point careal. In retrospect I thought it was very bold to portray their personal lives in such disaray. Quite a contrast to the "Leave it to Beaver", "Father knows Best" TV show portrayals of the time. Seems to be saying that success alone does not necesarily buy happiness. Happiness must come from within...might have more.

There is one key difference. Peck and his wife are struggling financially, like many American young middle aged Amercian couples in the 50s. March is very wealthy, and his relationship with his wife is much different, one of living almost aoprt from each other but in the same house, wiht March busy with the challenges of a welathy Amercian senior bs=usiness executive.

I think there's something more to the Hopkins/Rath relationship. Hopkins is Raths father, I suspect.

"Where is Aron?" - Adam
"I don't know. I'm not my brother's keeper." - Cal

I didn't suspect that he was his actual father, but rather that he had some fatherly feelings towards Tom Rath. Hopkins kept mentioning throughout the story that he thought Tom looked in certain ways like his son, a son that was killed in the war.

Fatherly yes, but not actual father.
