June and July of '45? (spoilers)

When Tom (Peck) tells his wife about the affair he said, "no one can know the terror I felt, and I was sure I'd be killed in the next action". She asked when that was and he said June and July of '45. Well, as you all hopefully know the war in Europe ended on May 8th of '45. So the question is what was the terror he felt and what was the next action he was going to die in in June and July of '45?
I think this film misses the mark in many ways, but is still worth watching. Any other thoughts?

Near as I could tell, Tom Rath and his unit had unexpected downtime in Rome after the signing of the agreement that ended the fighting in Italy, in early May, and before they shipped out to the Pacific theater. The Pacific was definitely still happening, and a source of great concern to the soldiers who were expecting extremely stiff resistance from the Japanese. My father made a similar swing, pulled from the Adriatic area in the spring and being headed for Japan in early August, winding up with the occupation army.
