Guns and Roses

I've seen a number of films where the criminals conceal shotguns in boxes of roses. This is the earliest one that I can recall; I wonder if it's the first to employ this technique?

Here's the ones that I can recall:

The Killing

The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three

Dog Day Afternoon

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Hard Boiled

Any others?

I was wondering that too. Before seeing this, I thought the earliest use of this technique was from The Godfather, where Clemenza hides the shotgun he uses to kill the mobsters in the elevator in a box of roses.

"Don't cry, it is to be; in time I'll take away your miseries and make 'em mine... D'Evils."

It is also funny that the gun was transferred from a violin case to the flower box. Those are typically the two items used to hide a gun in folklore.

Those are some of the few items of the right size and shape to carry rifles or submachine guns that someone could take almost anywhere without too much scrutiny. Back before people walked the streets with such weapons openly displayed that is!
