shareOverall the 1978 version is better I admit that BUT one thing I like better about the original is that the hero is alive at the end and even though we don't know for sure that the aliens will be defeated the human race has a fighting chance.
Are you aware that there are FIVE versions of the story? The original book took place in my childhood home of Mill Valley California and damn is that weird I even recognized the street names and places mentioned in the book! And the 1956 film was remade three times.
And get this of the five versions of the story the 1978 movie is the ONLY one where the main hero loses flat out and the pods win, in all the others the film ends with either complete victory against the pods or at least some hope for the human race.
Well I am the kind of person who likes to root for the underdog especially when fighting overwhelming odds, in a chase story I like the person or people being chased to get away.
That being said I had an idea for a more clever ending to the 1956 version. The entire movie is the main character in a mental hospital after being arrested for running around like a nut job in a traffic jam. Well the orderlies were humoring him and listening to his crazy story but of course they did not believe him they were just trying to figure out what was wrong with his mind, but when the radio announced the discovery of strange seed pods that exactly matched his descriptions they put 2 and 2 together and immediately notified the police and the military.
Well the whole time I was trying to figure out in my head what the "twist ending" would be and I came up with a doozy. My idea was after telling his whole story he finally succumbs to exhaustion and falls asleep, then one of the doctors carries a pod into his room, the irony being that the doctors talking to him were pod people the whole time just waiting for him to tire out and fall asleep and he was wasting his time telling them the story. That would have been priceless. In fact I did notice the doctors seemed emotionless but maybe its just natural for mental health doctors back then to be kind of bland people.
