How did they make the Pods?

Does anyone know the types of props they used? It seem like they used soap bubbles for some of the scenes when the duplicates were forming over their faces.

Does it look better in color?

Not sure what they used, but it looks great in the color version.

In an interview with Don Siegel in Castle of Frankenstein magazine decades ago, he stated that they made plaster body casts of Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter, King Donovan, and Carolyn Jones, then created rubber impressions from those. If I recall correctly, they covered the rubber "bodies" with soap bubbles and either inflated or deflated them as the soap bubbles slowly popped, then reversed the film and/or sped it up so it wouldn't be so obvious how they did it. If you watch the sequence again with this information, you can probably figure it out.

My memory of this part of the interview is a little hazy (and I don't have the magazine anymore) but it definitely involved life-size rubber replicas of their bodies and soap bubbles. He also mentioned that the rubber life-casts of Ms. Wynter and Ms. Jones were quite popular with the male crew members.
