I watched this expecting it to be scary and serious, but no it was the exact opposite… , silly reactions, wooden acting (e.g. when he discovers the duplicate in the cellar), annoying characters (she's being chased by a mob of lunatics and keeps complaining that she needs to sleep, yeah right…), plot holes. Example of the latter, at first the alien invasion is presented as really small-scale affecting a handful of people, however when the doctor discovers the seed pots, the invasion very suddenly grows to stupidly large-scale proportions affecting both Santa Mira (completely taken over!) and many other towns…

Overall, disappointing (6/10), given that it is an acclaimed classic. I hope the 1978 version is vastly superior: in the 70s, horror cinema had already matured, improved.

Yes and the Mona Lisa is overrated also

Yes I could not agree more Ed. I think both Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter made thus movie for me. Considering that this movie was released in 1956, I think it still holds up today as a very scary movie.

"Considering this film was made in 1956???" There are THOUSANDS of greater (and greater) movies made 30 to
40 years BEFORE 1956, and junk is released today.

This version makes the '78 version look like "The Muppetts take San Francisco"! The original is vastly superior to all other versions, with only the "Nicole Kidman" version coming close. That stupid "howl" the pod-people make, when they see a human (in the Donald Sutherland version), is ridiculous! It's not much better in the Gabrielle Anwar version, especially with the "umbilical-tentacles" addition. As with most movies, the original is (most-times) the best ... just in my opinion.

I watched both recently to compare, having seen both before, and to me the 1978 version is more compelling and technically (special effects and acting wise) superior the original. But I give credit for the 1956 version for being the original that later copies copied from.

The Nicole Kidman version is a joke and shouldn't even be mentioned.

I think it's a pretty good movie. It is creepy to me to consider that you can't trust people you see and know everyday. The idea that they can be replaced with a clone that looks, talks, and acts just like them so you can barely tell the difference is a scary one. I found the movie thoroughly intriguing and I look forward to watching the 1978 version eventually. I give it an 8/10.
