Mattie + Gard's Marriage

So when Mattie and Gard marry will he convert to a Quaker or will she become a Methodist (or whatever he is)? I assume the later.

reply

The Society of Friends doesn't insist on people who marry them becoming members of their religion. They're very open minded and tolerant in this, as in all aspects, of their admirable religion.

Interesting question. At the end of the movie, when they drive off together, I thought they were following her parents to a Meeting, but didn't he have his uniform on? I can't remember now!. Can't imagine he would wear his soldier's uniform to a Quaker Meeting. But perhaps someone can refresh my memory?

Well, my Grandmother was a Quaker and she married a Methodist and my Dad was raised methodist. Not sure if that helps, but that is my reality.

While non-Quakers are welcome to convert, Quakers can and do "disown" those who marry outside the Quaker religion. The meeting records are full of them. It's not like the Amish shunning. They just don't consider them Quaker any more. I have a ggggrandmother who was disowned because she married my Methodist Episcopalian ggggrandfather.

I wondered about that myself. The family seemed pretty loose in terms of their following the ways of the Quakers especially considering the mothers had high standing in the congregation.

It seemed she was the only one who actually believed and followed the teachings consistently. The others went through the motions but used every chance they got to do whatever they wanted. The mother would put up a fight, like with the organ, but then promptly gave in.
