High School English Teacher

She was also my high school english teacher in CA. She taught "English as Lititure. She was a very good teacher and really got into her work.
She made us read stories and plays out loud and made us act out the stories.
We all thought it was cool to see her in The Twilight Zone. Our school was racially diverse and she always treated everyone equally.

....and by 'she' I'm sure you mean Phyllis Love, who played Mattie.

That is so cool that you had her as your h.s. English teacher. Nice to hear that she was a passionate and effective teacher! I didn't like English lit. but I might have paid attention and gotten something out of it if my teacher was an actress...especially one who had co-starred in this, one of my all time favorite movies! So that means you have only one degree separation between you and the legendary Gary Cooper.

What a sad thing to say; that you didn't appreciate your class as much because your teacher wasn't an actress. What an insult to all the hard-working teachers out there. I'm not taking away from any teacher who was an actor but it shouldn't be a necessity to encourage kids to learn.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]

It may be sad, but it is the truth. I'm not saying any actress or celebrity, just anyone who had some credibility for me. Reading Kafka and James Joyce, et al was pretty horrid and left me distrustful of lit teachers.

My husband and son and I were having this discussion last night. Hubby says EVERYONE should be forced to read Steinbeck in high school. My son said that they make you read these works when you are too young to understand or appreciate. I agree.

To this day, I prefer to read non-fiction, with very few exceptions. My fiction has to come by way of film.
