One of the cutest scenes...

The daughter, Mattie, catching her parents (Gary Cooper & Dorothy McGuire) making out (i.e. "silent prayer"). "Have thee forgotten we have company?!" Hee.

I purchased/watched this today, and adored it. Charming. Touching. And the religious core of the film is handled well; they weren't too heavy-handed with it. Definitely one of Gary Cooper's best.

I love the scene where they're coming back from the barn, and Jess asks Eliza if they can go back there sometime. Very, very cute. Very, very sexy.

reply

Agreed...it's very, very cute and sexy because it's set up well. Remember Jess is just home from a trip, he and Eliza have been apart. Factor that with them having an argument and you have sexual tension. Plus we the viewers never see it, just see them returning from the barn the next morning, both with satisfied grins...one if not the only time in the film Eliza is giddy.

Yes, lovely and a nice way of showing that devout, religious people don't have to be depicted as 'sexless'. And, so funny with Sam Jordan asking Jess how he got her to agree to keep the organ and his reply "reasoned with her, just reasoned with her" and Sam swipes the straw off his clothes and roars with laughter! So nice and understated!

reply

I agree. To me that's always been one of the most romantic and sexiest scenes ever filmed.

The " I'm off to the barn" scenes and there follow-ups the next morning are just wonderfully warm, comical and yes, quite sexy. A great reverse play of the old "man being banished to the dog house" trope.🐭
