Meaning of the Title??
Is the title an attempt to show mixed emotions?
shareIt's a reference to the pacifist philosophy of the Quakers. In this context it's a reference to the Quaker resistance to fighting in the Civil War. The Quakers preferred to win a disagreement through friendly persuasion as opposed to physical violence or even raising one's voice. The disagreement between Jess and Eliza over the organ is an illustration of how this philosophy played out in domestic relations as well. In a more sentimental interpretation, the lyrics to the theme song suggest that a lover's two lips would provide the friendly persuasion to win the heart of another.
sharecould be that the friendly persuasion means just that (as the title) because the quakers were pacifists among many other things, but the quakers always referred to one another as "friend" such as friend birdwell...the official title of the quakers are the society of friends...quakers as a tradition will always help out another quaker if they are in need...so i believe that is the meaning of the title...
...the official title of the quakers are the society of friends...That's it! Just a play/variation on their official title.🐭 share
