Burt Lancaster. What this film needs is a touch of zany energy. In the 1950s, only one actor could have pulled it off, Lancaster. Replacing Wayne, it would have been a touch of The Crimson Pirate in an epic format. Might have worked.

Check out Palance in The Barbarians, if you can find it. Shown on US television as Rivak the Barbarian in 1960. The IMDB Amazon link points to the Paul brothers flick of the same title. Apparently the JP version is unavailable on DVD, but, it beat Steve Reeves 'swords and sandals' epics to the small screen.
