It would be creepy if...

...Rhoda was “right” and did deserve the penmanship medal, but Miss Fern, who clearly didn’t like her, unfairly awarded it to Claude. Thus setting this particular murder into motion.

Also, did anyone else hear Eileen Heckert (Mrs. Daigle) call Christine “Isabel" the second time she lurched into the apartment?

reply

Had Rhoda won the medal, it would only have paused her 'career' for a while - remember that it was already underway.

In my case, self-absorption is completely justified.

reply

Yes, I know that, but do you think that Miss Fern gave the medal unfairly to Claude because of her feelings against Rhoda? If so, Miss Fern put Claude in a very dangerous position unknowingly.

I think Rhoda probably deserved the medal. Miss Fern was most likely attempting to "spread the wealth."

reply

If that's true then Claude would still be alive and Miss Fern would have a guilty conscience and feel as if she was responsible for his death her whole life. How sad.

reply

In the book, the medal is given for "most improved penmanship" - so of course Rhoda's penmanship would have always been perfect. Claude would have had room for improvement.

reply

I am surprised Rhoda didn't go after Miss Fern....

Let's not get carried away. Ms. Fern was in no way responsible for Rhoda killing Claude. The girl was disturbed. Even if she had been more deserving of the medal than Claude, she was not justified in killing him and no one led her to do it.
