She went to the docks, looking for fish? Cause there was no boats for her getaway. But while there for no reason, she was struck by lighting.

She went looking to recover the medal, which her mother dropped in the water next to the pilings.

Right - in the book she gets away with everything completely. If the author had lived much longer, he would probably have written a sequel with a teenage Rhoda committing more bizarre crimes.

I realize the end of the movie is different from what was in the book and it was the kind of ending required by the Production code but I think it's a good ending and it works. Rhoda killed her classmate to get the medal she felt she deserved. That's what started the whole thing.

She went to great lengths to get that medal before so it would make complete sense that she'd go after it again. If she knew her mother had tossed it into the water where the little boy died, it fits Rhoda's personality and obsession over the medal that she would go out in search of it.

The lightning strike that killed her may seem far-fetched but even that's plausible. When a storm is near people are advised to take shelter. If they're in or on the water, they're advised to get out immediately. As I recall, Rhoda was on the pier. Not much is known about what happens when lightning hits water but it is known lightning tends to strike the highest point in an area. The pier would have been the highest point in relation to the water and it was isolated. It might be the first place lightning would hit.

I had always assumed the lightning stuck the metal net she was using to fish out the medal.

Man, it demolished the entire end of the freaking pier! She not only blew up--she blew up real good.
