They cut Lonely Room due to Rod Steiger not being a strong singer…

… yet they let Gloria Grahame showcase the magnitude of her socially awkward mannerisms and her tone-deaf voice in all her glory in all of Ado Annie’s songs despite her being a far worse singer than Rod Steiger (and I don’t think Rod Steiger’s voice was even that bad).

SMH 🤦

What makes you think that's the reason for cutting Lonely Room? From what I've read the rationale was not wanting to dwell too much on Jud or make him a sympathetic character. They could have easily dubbed his singing voice with another vocalist if they wanted the song in the movie.

It’s the impression I’ve been given when I read about this topic before. As far as them not wanting Jud to be a sympathetic character, Jud still had some sympathetic elements in the movie so that’s a bit of a moot point. A character can be sympathetic and you can still realize he is a threat to others - in fact, Lonely Room still showcases that fact even more while emphasizing his character motivations. It just makes Jud less one-dimensional, and the more I dive into the song the more I realize how powerful it is and how much the people behind this movie wasted an opportunity.
