whats with the overacting?,its just stupid.
shareDISAGREE
shareI thought it was interesting that in the very last scene when he realizes Pulver is going to be just as much trouble as Roberts that instead of grimacing he seems to be smiling, almost as if he finds it so funny he can't control it.
shareMy favorite Cagney moment is when he is going through the ship's roster trying to determine who could have thrown the palm tree overboard. As the sailor is reading off the names alphabetically, Cagney considers each name before dismissing them. When the sailor gets to Pulver's name, Cagney pauses. Then a grin slowly creeps over his face as he says, "Pulver. He doesn't have the GUTS!"
The quiet certitude with which he delivers the line makes it clear that he knows exactly what is going on aboard his ship.

Obviously the original poster is on drugs (or is a moron). Jimmy Cagney steals this movie, even though he's surrounded by other Hollywood icons like Fonda, Lemmon and Ward Bond. Jimmy Cagney is one of the most revered and adored Hollywood stars ever, and was a stupendous actor.
Watch "White Heat," original poster, or "One, Two, Three."
Anyone can like or dislike an actor's performance, and even good actors can be miscast or give bad performances, but I have no clue what the OP is talking about. (Maybe he's just a troll.) I think Cagney was terrific in this film, but even if someone somehow doesn't care for his performance, one thing he didn't do was "overact".
He was also hilarious in One, Two, Three, generalusgrant, but one person you forgot to mention in Mister Roberts was William Powell, who was perfection as "Doc" in his last-ever film role.
He was meant to be cantankerous and the film shoot was difficult an d caused problems on set.
Its that man again!!
First let me say that I generally enjoyed virtually all of the performances in this film. The Captain (Cagney) was a scheming, bellicose, bullying tyrant. Cagney played it up to the hilt. You can hardly argue that it was a restrained performance. At times he was over the top, but it was an over the top character.
But if you want to see ultra OTP check out Burl Ives playing the same character in "Ensign Pulver".
