The Admirals' Goat

I often thought it strange that he had a Goat as a pet. But today on TCM was 'Navy Blue and Gold' with Jimmy Stewart and Robert Young. Story was about three Annapolis men that played football. (not a very good description). Anyway, during the Army-Navy game there was goat with a Navy blanket that was on a leash. So upon looking it up I found that 'Billy the Goat' was the Navy Mascot. Now the scene in Mr. Roberts makes sense.

I always laugh at that scene, because my Dad met "Bill 1942", while in Officer's Training. He said that "Bill" was the most beautiful, sweet smelling, purebred goat he'd ever seen. He also said that the goat tried to charge everyone except his trainer. In short, a GOAT. (g)

When I was a Cadet at the USAF Academy years ago, some of our 1st class Cadets flew to Annapolis 2 nights before the Navy/Air Force football game at Falcon Stadium, and kidnapped Bill VII and flew him back to USAFA where he ate as the guest of the Cadet Wing for Friday Steak Night...along with Gen Jimmy Doolittle...we beat Navy 15-7 the next day....good times, good times

A female goat makes more sense. These anecdotes may have it mixed up, but a female goat can give milk to a person allergic to cow's milk, and takes up a lot less space.
