does anybody think that Dean Martin should have played Sky masterson
He was also a box office star at the time and he could actually sing and do skys' songs justice.

I DID like brando ALOT in this film. Dean Martin may have done a little better than brando on the track, but we would have lost everything else about the performance. Dean would have tanked this role. Brando did a good job on the track and a fantastic job on everything else.
As a musical lover, I think it's always better to cast more of an actor than a singer. If the actor doesn't come through on the singing, you can easily dub the songs and you still have a good finished product. If you cast a singer, and he doesn't come through on the acting, you're screwed.
Sinatra is one of those Great singers and good actors. Gene Kelly is another who could also sing and act well, and dance great.
Dino still with Jerry Lewis at the time.I'd have cast Sinatra as Sky,James Cagney as Nathan, maybe Grace Kelly as Sarah-although Jean Simmons was both gorgeous and talented.
shareGene Kelly would have been the perfect Sky Masterson. He desperately wanted the role.
shareGene Kelly would had been great in the role. Shame that he was wanted for the McCarthy witch hunts!
Its that man again!!
Whenever I see the above picture featuring this film, my first thought is always of Gene Kelly strutting in that suit instead of Brando.
Not to say that Brando was lacking in some way, but it feels like he had baggage to overcome to inhabit the role, while I think Gene could have given it one of those effortless performances he was so good at projecting.
Give me Brando for heavyweight acting any day of the week, but for a light and charismatic touch, I think Gene Kelly easily would have filled this bill.
No, no, not Dean Martin. The man simply couldn't act.
shareOMG i <3 marlon brando in this movie!! he takes on the role perfectly in my opinon and Dean Martin is amazing as well but i personally prefer Marlon as Sky!
Jack Sparrow: Elizabeth!
[Turns to Gibbs]
Jack Sparrow: Hide the rum
Interesting question. It would have been an different "Sky" for sure. Vocally, of course, it's no contest.
But I really think that there was no way that Dean (I love ya Dean...) could pose the physical threat, that is, he didn't have the "machismo" that the role demands and that Brando exudes.
Dean was a better actor than given credit, I'll give you that, for sure. Have you seen the film, "Career."? He does some amazing work in it.
Martin wouldn't have been able to play Masterson since he was still teamed with Jerry Lewis at the time. Jerry as Nathan Detroit? Jerry as Nicely-Nicely? Hah! But I still woulda preferred Dino to Brando.
shareHow can you have an actor who can't sing to save his life have the lead in Guys and Dolls with the most songs? Brando's singing was annoying, and it was almost as bad as his acting in the movie. His voice got on my nerves and I think Sinatra said it best when he called Brando a bad actor, calling him "Mumbles". I understand the man did "A Streetcar Named Desire" and he's Don Vito Corleone, ok those were great roles, but Brando as Sky Masterson was terrible, and it kills me to watch him play this role, because this is one of my favorite movies and musicals of all time.
shareExactly. Brando messed up this execution. It will never be the classic that it could have been with Sinatra or maybe Gene Kelly.
There's a REASON that Brando was never cast in a singing role EVER again.
Not only was he pretty bad (though his character acting was okay), but you have SINATRA right there - the perfect choice for the role. Really a travesty.
Dean Martin would not even be an option. He's a mediocre actor at best, working in comedies mainly as he simply didn't bring much emotional feel or reality to his work. No. No Dino please.
Charles Laughton would have had more charm in this role than Brando. He single-handedly ruins this movie.
That just goes to show you. You go someplace and there you are.
I know I'm almost 5 years later, here, but Dean Martin was not a mediocre actor. He truly could act. Being a straight man, alone, takes a lot of talent. People tend to overlook that. He was very good in several serious type roles. He gets a lot of flak to this day, which is sad. He was very talented, could sing, act, and perform comedy. He's underestimated because people tend to think of him as his 'drunk' persona and being 'Jerry's sidekick'. He was more rounded than that.
As for this role, I think he could have done quite well. He was the 'King of Cool', after all.

According to Scott Berg's biography of Sam Goldwyn, Goldwyn did in fact consider offering the roles of Sky and Nathan to Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.
I've been married to one Marxist and one Fascist, and neither one would take the garbage out.
Hmmm. Would have been difficult, as Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were under contract to Paramount Pictures and I shouldn't imagine Paramount lending them out to Goldwyn.
shareSorry to his fans out there, But the idea of Jerry Lewis as Nathan Detroit turns my stomach.
shareDean Martin would have been an excellent Sky Masterson and if Dean had played the part, they wouldn't have had to cut "My Time of Day"...Dean could have handled that song.
shareI know I'm coming in really late but I don't think anyone but Brando could have given Skye that "cool" vibe in that kind of way. I love Dean Martin and he's an amazing singer but he isn't Brando
shareYes, Brando has that great screen presence, but his singing left a lot to be desired. As an aside, I downloaded a recording of Dino and Frank Sinatra singing 'Guys and Dolls', and I like it much better than the movie version. Dino did have a great voice, better in fact than Sinatra..
shareHey DryToast,
I didn't know Goldwyn had actually considered Martin & Lewis. I've always thought that "Nathan" should only be played by a Jewish comic actor, so maybe Jer would've worked.
"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"
Brando was perfect except his singing. It was not that good at all. I think he did better job than anyone else could have for acting. Perhaps they should have gotten someone else to sing his part.
shareBurt Lancaster as Sky and Tony Curtis as Nathan.
Absurdity: A Statement or belief inconsistent with my opinion.
NO, not for me.
I wouldn't have watched it if Marlon hadn't been in it !
I'm surprised no one's mentioned Burt Lancaster as Sky. He had the screen presence and could actually sing.
