Deleted line?

Something odd in this movie: When the principal calls Dadier in to talk about his racial remarks, he asks Dadier what part of the country he's from. Dadier answers, but his answer isn't audible. The rest of the scene then continues normally. Anyone know the story behind that?

The line in question is "What difference does that make?"

Interesting. Because we can't hear the answer, we get curious to find out and start to guess. Will Dadier be from the South? From Alabama? Rural parts of the North? Every guess tells us nothing about Dadier, yet reveals all the more about ourselves. When we finally get to hear what Dadier actually responded ('What difference does that make?') it is as if the answer is a reply to *our guesses*, not to the principal. Thus the director involves - and castigates - us, the spectators.

Maybe this was never intentional, but it sure may work out that way.
