Ron Kirby

The most pathetically false male lead I have ever seen. Never have female ideals been so blatantly superimposed upon a character. Jeez, everytime you see him he is sanding the bannister or feeding a deer or tending his trees. Christ almighty, why does he never just sit and stare into space for a while like the rest of us do?

Of course falling off a cliff couldn't kill him, he's literally Rock. Not a slight on Hudson, but the character was horribly written.

I saw this in Film Genre class and we were actually laughing at it. It was just silly.

Also, those kids were horrible. Have they forgotten that that is their mother? Ungrateful, selfish little rats.

Actually, BEFORE your time, some men actually worked with their hands, fed animals and tended to gardens and trees.

If you are staring off into space then you are literally wasting time that could be spent on doing something useful.

My grandfather never was a man to 'stare off into space for a while', he was always working on something, tearing down houses with his bare hands, chopping down trees, studying and reading books and helping others in need, all while working for the railroad, running his church, playing baseball, hopping trains for fun, providing for his wife and raising 10 kids. And he survived numerous accidents from working on dangerous building projects.

He took care of stray animals and was an avid fisherman.

The only thing I do agree with you on, is how disrespectful Cary's kids were.

So, you have to think about where this movie takes place and in what era.
There actually were men like Ron around and I'm sure there still are, although in much less of a number.

Before you laugh, think about who other people 'could' be and not just about who 'you' are now....or I should say..who you are 'not'.

Your grandfather sounds like a great guy. So was mine!

I hope to meet one like that myself!

My working husband (farmer) and I totally agree with your post, MarthaJonesSmith! My husband is the "Ron Kirby" and your grandfather type and I wouldn't have it any other way. We are never bored, and there is always something to do :) AND, Cary's kids were bratty, spoiled, condescending and extremely disrespectful.

We like this movie, in spite of the kids ;)

Of course it was kind of silly, the way Hudson was presented throughout. It woulda been cool if, for once, the Wyman woman woulda had a chance encounter with him while he´s urinating on the street in broad daylight, drunk as a skunk and swearing like a sailor. Woulda spiced things up real good. A REAL challenge for the community.

Why not slight Hudson? He's an incredibly wooden actor.

While it's true Rock was a fairly poor actor ("wooden" as you say...), I agree with Martha's comment that long ago men actually worked with their hands, grew crops, sanded wood, made fires, treated ladies with deference, and generally acted different than a "modern" film-student (of any gender) might be able to properly comprehend. And it was - and is -- and admirable trait. To another commentor: the plaid lumberjack shirt preceded the sterotypical gay iconic motif you sugggest. Get real. What's the term? Ethnocentrism, I think. Well, it's a form of that (generocentrism?) to believe you generation's filters, perceptions are the only view to an understanding of a film, a book, a poem. A life...

A man who does things. And now they sit and stare into space. They don't make them like Ron Kirby anymore.
