shareIt's illegal now, but it wasn't illegal then (the 1950's). Just FYI.
I can resist anything but temptation.
I, for one, miss that smell!
shareNothing says Autum like a pile of burning leaves.

To this day the smell of burning takes me back to childhood. Funny, you can't burn leaves but the air is worse now than ever.
shareWell, burning leaves contributes to bad air quality.
On a lighter note, this movie is on Comcast On Demand through October!

I too recall the smell of burning leaves in the fall and love it. We never burned in town, but my grandparents did in the country.
And no, back it the time when this movie was set, it wasn't illegal to burn.
We certainly did burn leaves in town, and in a big town at that, Philadelphia, PA circa mid-1960s. Maybe burning ordinances started in the 1970s?
Us kids used to ride our bikes through the burning leaves, and neither we nor our bikes seemed the worse for wear for doing it. The things you do when another kid double dog dares you!
As has already been stated, burning leaves wasn't always illegal. Cars didn't have seat belts either. It's called a "period piece" meaning it's meant to depict a time or period in the past.
shareOld post, I know, but this film was made in 1955. It depicted a contemporary setting at the time, so it is not a period film.

I stand corrected!
shareI doubt burning leaves is illegal in every area even today.
shareIt was not illegal way back in the fifties and sixties. Everybody who had a garden did it.
shareI still burn an occasional leaf.
