Movie Location of Mill

Does anybody know where this mill is located (Ron Kirby's house)? Was it really built in the studio just for the movie or does it exist?

reply

I'm still looking for the location of the mill.

The exterior was on the Colonial Street section of the Universal backlot. It has since been altered and is now Teri Hatcher's house on "Desperate Housewives."

reply

Thanks, Grule. Good to know although I kept hoping that the mill was somewhere in the country and accessible.

I'm glad you asked about it. It was such a gorgeous setting I wanted to visit it, myself.

I'm not sure that the mill ever existed other than just a portion of the façade. They always go to a wide shot to show the whole building, including the wheel and it's always looked like a matte painting to me, just the left side. Notice how the cars and characters never cross to the left.

I'm sure the interiors are pure soundstage.

reply

The wide exterior shots of the mill are indeed matte paintings. They were made by veteran Universal Studios matte painter Russell Lawson, who never received any on-screen credit from Universal during the thirty or so years he painted for them.

Hi Tobey and vistavizion,

Too bad it's just a matte painting, but that's how Hollywood often used to work.
I should have known :).

Thanks,

Chrissie

PS: How did you find out about Russell Lawson?

reply

The read about Russell Lawson on a blog called "Matte Shot - a Tribute to Golden Era Special FX."

There's an absolute ton of information and pictures on matte painting there.
