Hello,

Universal was planning to release THIS ISLAND EARTH with a package of about 12 or so other 1950s classic sci-fi B-movies, as its headliner, in fall 2003, and as far as I know, the packaging was completed, but the release was cancelled because Universal was sold to a big conglomerate corporation and now everything is backlogged. I would expect that the new reorganized Universal will release this package of 1950s classics sometime in 2005. Oddly, the company may release them in the UK and Europe first. A note of interest: Universal has never released this movie on DVD, only licensed it to Image Entertainment which released it from 1999 until their license expired in 2001. That is why the former DVD release is now OOP and collectors are driving the prices up on e-Bay.
When the new Universal DVD is released it will be a special collectors edition with many extras including a documentary of the making of the film which Bob Skotak was working on some time back.

Unviersal was bought up by International in the '50s, then by a few other companies, then MCA, and just recently by NBC.

Hello, Silent,

I beg to differ! Universal was NOT "bought up by International in the '50s" as you stated. It became Universal-International in late 1946 after absorbing a British film company and began distributing its films directly in the UK and in Europe then. The first U-I British-American picture was "Stairway To Heaven" starring David Niven and Kim Hunter in glorious Technicolor. Universal then merged with music giant MCA in 1958, and discontinued the U-I name and logo in 1966.

Dejal,

Thanks for the correction. However, my point still rests that Universal has been a conglomerate company since the 1940s.
