Now here's a movie they should remake

It's not totally bad, but still, if there was ever room for improvement in a still interesting plot, it was with this movie.

REMAKE!? Blech! Honestly, is there ANY originality left in Hollywood today? Like Forbidden Planet and The Day the Earth Stood Still, THIS is one of those movies that should be left alone as classics in the past. Now if one was to go and make the proposed SEQUAL that was planned wayback that is TRUE TO THE TIME PERIOD OF THE ORIGIAL then maybe we can talk about doing something in the present that is THIS ISLAND EARTH related.

You think this is a classic? Wow, kkuch, that is so sad. This is an interesting story, and some of the characters had potential. But if it is a classic, it's not for being great. I mean, if you going to remake a film, might as well do it for a film that was a C-Grade film when it came out, rather than the A-Grade films that hardly can be improved on.

Honestly, I love this film for what it is and like the old Battlestar Galactica series, I'd hate to see it contaminated by any sort of remake whatsoever (as it seems that half of your posts for older movies are remake related). Something doesn't have to be grade-A to be a classic. Some people consider "Teenagers From Outer Space" or even "Robot Monster" classics because they are such enjoyable films that are so much fun to watch! Besides, what's so great about remakes anyway? It just means that somebody was too lazy to write something original and decided to try to cash in on an older idea. What do you have to say about that?

All I have to say is basically what I said before. I don't like remakes as such, but if you're going to do them, doing from a movie that was C-Grade at based, like this movie. When they talk about remake grade-A films like Psycho, Strangers On A Train, East of Eden, All The King's Men, it gets annoying and redundant. I know the studios want to remake them to make money, but any honest film critic can only abide a remake if it is to improve upon a film that was a C-Grade, like This Island Earth, or a B-Grade, like The Punisher with Dolph Lundgren. They were talking about redoing Casablanca. Why? How can you improve on Casablanca? Exactly, you can't. Thank God, cooler heads prevailed.

For what it's worth, THIS ISLAND EARTH was an "A" picture through and through when it was made. Color, widescreen and stereophonic sound were not generally attached to science fiction films in the '50s, and TIE did that all, on top of a prestigious cast and special effect crew.

It barely makes a C grade at times, imo. I mean,it's entertaining from the fact that it's so mediocre, but it does try and does have some interesting action.

Out of curiousity, what would you rate the following science fiction movies from the time period (I still say TIE was in the league with them but that's beside the point) and using the same way that you rate TIE?
War of the Worlds (1953)
Forbidden Planet (1956)
When Worlds Collide (1951)
it Came From Outer Space (1953)
Conquest of Space (1955)

I fully agree that a remake is possible. The film was drastically uneven. I still liked what it was trying to do. It was the 'first of its kind'; a color space opera. However, it was more of a fond 'shaky experiment.'

But it had greater potential, and was constricted by a limited budget.

It could benefit from a well thought out remake. More activities on Metaluna, better dialogue, better FX; etc.

Don't remake classics, but remake those 'interesting misfires' that could have been, but fell short.

As much as I still like this film, I can also see many flaws that could be corrected.

Now, a film like DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS should be remade, since the original was uneven, hence it never really lived up to its greater potential.

Instead of "remaking the film", return to the original source material. THIS ISLAND EARTH and DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS could both be improved upon. Of course, it all depends on who's involved in the production. Hopefully, it will be by people who still appreciate the originals, and what they were at least attempting to do.

if they bothered to remake this, it would just focus on a ton of computer generated scenes and effects and not do anything for the plot.

THAT is the sad tragedy that is today's idea of "remakes". a bunch of computer graphics that are really nothing more than computer cartoons

they think, "This would benefit from modern effects technology" not "this story is great and could even be better if we write it better". Sad.

Movie making today has become a sad state of affairs. SFX dominate today's movies, with little regard to story or plotting.

It's all become very forgettable.

^^ Truth! Exactly why I don't go much anymore. Just isn't even worth the money or my time. And I have spare money jsut for this type of entertainment. Oh well, their loss. I guess kids still buy into or something because it seems a profitable path for them.

People like YOU are responsible they do those awful remakes.
