Should Exeter have survived?

I always felt Exeter should have lived on for a possible sequel to THIS ISLAND EARTH or even had his own TV series.

I think he should'nt survived only for a sequel involving a possible invasion by survivors of his home planet. They mastered space travel, and have obviously gone to other worlds, so why would every single one of them be on Metaluna?

Sorry. Exeter had to commit suicide. His world gone, and all his notions of right and wrong turned upside down, how could he face humanity with what he almost brought on them? (For even if the Monitor had not planned to keep his dictatorial powers and turn the Earth into a slave colony, Zahgon would have attacked Earth for daring to get in the way, however "innocently," of the awesome revenge they were determined to take.)
