Cheesy of course, but disturbing too. Whenever I watch scifi from this era, I'm always struck by how authoritarian America seems by the standards of today. The job of the scientist in 50s films was never to criticize overtly the government's explorations in space, the pollution of American streams and sewers, and active experiments into splitting the atom; his role was only to find solutions. That changes a great deal by the end of the next decade and especially from the 70s on.
