Them! and the Thing!

The other day, while watching TV, I got these two movies mixed up, since they both have James Arness in them, they are both early '50s black-and-white films, and they both concern either aliens from space or giant bugs or something. As I started to watch this film, I realized that it had no ice in it, as the Thing does, and, in face, has a lot of DESERT in it!

I wonder if others have mixed up the two films.

I never mixed them up per second, but they have always been connected in my mind. Back when I was a teenager, TBS had a show called "Super Scary Saturday" with Al Lewis hosting (in character as Grandpa Munster, no less) as they featured a different movie each week. I saw both of these movies for the first time while watching this show. Because of this, I will probably always associate one movie with the other.

Strong remembrances and associations seem to be a typical experience of young minds that watched these and many other movies of that era. I watched both of these in movie theaters as an adolescent in the 1950s and they made a lasting impression on me. I always try to see them on TV when they and many others are shown.

Guess there is something to "young minds being impressionable" after all.

No mixing them up, but they are similar in lots of ways: the witty dialogue while the characters face danger, the slim, wisecracking woman scientist, jokes about drinking (but not much actual drinking). It felt a lot like a knockoff of a Howard Hawks movie, which is high praise as far as I am concerned.
