When this film was made mutants spawned radiation was something new, by the end of the 50's radiation creating monsters became a cliche'. Radiation in the fifites made bugs grow big, awaken sleeping dinosaurs, bring back the dead, turn people into vampires, cause people to shrink even for fill death curses (FROM HELL IT CAME!). In thirties and forties is was gland transplants and electricty that got the monster going.
shareYea this was pretty much the first movie to use the a-bomb mutation thing, even before Gojira. As for the awakening giant bug scenario, check out the Deadly Mantis, its a huge praying mantis thats been frozen in an ice cap for eons that is thawed and wreaks some havoc. its fun, but no where near as good as THEM (Deadly Mantis even showed up on a later Mystery Science Theatre 3000).
sharebecause water ballons bringing monster to us would not work, a bottle rocket-maybe.
sharethey should of just use NANOBOTS
they can do anything
This movie was made at the dawning of the nuclear family, there were fallout shelters everywhere, kids practiced dropping under their desks, air raid sirens wailed the last Wednesday of the month. It was a good ploy to prey on the fears of people, at the time. It was, a scary movie, after all.
shareAre you sure? I mean Gojira also came out in 1954 in Japan. I guess they could have seen Them! and released Gojira before the year ended. But I always thought the makers of Gojira took more of their inspiration from The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms and came up with the nuclear thing on their own, basing it off of the Lucky Dragon incident. I could be wrong, though.
shareBecause no fossils of ants that size have ever been found . . .
"It's a trap!"
- Admiral Ackbar
Because, the movie was made during the whole WWIII atomic war is coming period. Back when kids in school did DROP drills and the air raid sirens were tested once a month, Civil Defense crackers were stockpiled in fallout shelters. Atomic bombs were still very new and not well understood generally.
shareBecause A-bombs were what was on people's mind in the 50s when the nuclear genie was 'out of the bottle'. The effects of radiation were little understood (even today). And they were continuing to test nuclear bombs in the western US and in the Pacific also underground and in the atmosphere. Not just us but several other nations were doing the same thing. Who knew that the mutations from radiation would not create horrible monsters? This was still a major topic in the wake of events like Chernobyl and Three Mile Island.
sharedo you mean "cretaceous era"?
RIP Heath Ledger 1979-2008
because people don't understand them, so it's easier to make up stories around them
so many movies, so little time
