the voice of Oscar

Who does the voiceover from Oscar? I think this guy had quite a voiceover career back then because his voice sounds very familiar.

reply

I think I have heard it before too. In fact, I think he may be the preview voice over for the Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis film at the drive-in in GREASE. You must be like me in that you saw this on Christmas Eve on TCM!

reply

Sounds like the guy that used to do the Disney VO for the nature movies on "Wonderful World of Color"..I've got it TiVo'd so I'll see if VO man gets credited, but it's doubtful, since Red Skelton didn't even get credited..

ps: good ol' Hollywood, trying to pass off a 50 year old Dick Powell as 35..of course Debbie was only 22 at the time, and was passing for 17..

reply

Um guys, his name is Art Gilmore. All you have to do is click on the full cast and crew link on the page and his name is there.

reply

Art Gilmore was also the voice over for the beginning of the Broderick Crawford TV series "Highway Patrol." Art is really a nice guy. I met him once out in North Hollywood at Radio and TV Pioneers luncheon event at the Sportman's Lodge.
When I saw his name tag, I said "oh Art Gilmore, Highway Patrol!" To which he replied ".....whenever the laws of any state are broken...." and then went on to do the whole voice over lead-in. " Neat guy and GRREAT voice.

reply

Coincidentally, for those interested, this movie also has another of the all time great movie and TV voice artists, Les Tremayne, playing Harvey Butterworth.

reply

Just watched it on TCM and it was not Art Gilmore but longtime network radio announcer Ken Carpenter doing Oscar's commentary throughout the film. I don't recall at what point Gilmore's equally terrific pipes may have been heard.

reply

Yes, it was indeed Ken Carpenter.

the credits in imdb are dynamic... they are constantly changing as people make changes... so what's there today may not have been there last week for someone to see.

reply

True, though not all that dynamic in this case, as the erroneous Art Gilmore listing has remained in place for years despite one or more correction requests having been submitted. No big deal, of course.

reply

i've noticed that Goofs either take a long time to update, or don't update at all... wonder if they are waiting to view the film again to verify it.
