I am a big fan of musicals. I saw Seven Brides as a teenager and thought it was a yawn fest. Tried again with a friend decades later and found it trite and way too stagey. The screenplay dialogue is lacking and the performances too overdone in earnestness and attempts at character. Everyone is "acting". Some excellent choreography though.

I am far from a PC policeman, but I just watched a good deal of it just now and wonder why anyone can be so enthralled with a boring piece of crap whose basic premise is the kidnapping of women for breeding purposes. Maybe some Trump or Cruz supporters do not find that notion archaic.

But, hey, I guess if some of the tunes are hummable and the dances are lively, it's good family entertainment. Give me "Hair", "Chicago" and "Cabaret" any day.

I've seen the postings on this Message Board, women LOVE this movie! Cute..Simple..everything a woman loves, well I LOVE it too. Somehow I missed it along the way, I remember TV series was big for a heartbeat. Howard Keel, Jane Powell, Russ Tamblyn (Westside Story) he was everywhere.the dancing is 4Star! Singing, dancing, acting, this ones got it all! Really enjoyed it.

I am as liberal and progressive as they come, and I'm quite capable of taking the plot as it's meant -- a satirical look at male/female relationships not intended to be taken seriously. Not everything has to have a "message" or social commentary to be good. Pure fun and entertainment can be just as viable.

Thank you! I almost felt guilty for a minute, since I enjoy this film whenever I see it.

I liked the musical numbers and especially the amazing dance numbers. The movie wasn't meant to endorse kidnapping women for marriage. It's just light hearted fun, like so many MGM musicals of that era. Showboat was more serious, I love that one too.

And I always thought Howard Keel was so handsome, and with that big booming voice.

You should never feel guilty for liking this movie or any other just because some self-righteous virtue-signalling idiot tries to shame you about it. The fact that you like "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" proves you are smarter than the OP because you recognize that it's a musical comedy and is not intended to be taken seriously.
