Did you find out about Nicole's sad passing via the IMDb, or somewhere else?
The reason I ask is because the French press totally ignored mentioning that Nicole Maurey had died, even though she starred in four movies which have acquired cult status.

Hi, it was on her IMDb page that I found out. I ws taking a chance since some people like to post hoax death-dates on this site from time to time. That's why I PM'd you and hobnob to see if it was really true. What a shame about the French press. However, I guess they are preoccupied with the current terrorism Europe is experiencing.

Fantastic interview with Nicole you did, by the way! So nice you had the chance to meet the lady.

Many thanks to you, Brock, for finding this news and passing it on. As I told you and James elsewhere, I suspect her family, while they placed a private obituary in the French newspapers, didn't publicize her death, probably assuming the press would pick up on it sooner or later, which I'm sure will happen. Still, it's disappointing that her passing didn't receive wider note at the time.

James is the world's number-one expert on all things connected to Secret of the Incas, including its cast, and I believe Nicole gave him her memorabilia from the film in Paris several yeas ago, a typically nice gesture. His interview with her, conducted I believe at the same time, is indeed really good.

Anyway, without you none of us would ever have heard the sad news until...well, much later. Our thanks again, and take care.

Brock and hob

I am really angry that the French press ignored the passing of Nicole Maurey.
It's a total disgrace!

I was dubious about writing a tribute to Nicole for the simple reason that I wasn't sure she had expired. The news arrived on IMDb on April Fool's Day, and I didn't want to be part of anyone's sick prank!

Since reading it on IMDb I have contacted two of my friends in Paris, both delightful ladies, one runs a French website on Charlton Heston, and the other is Nicole Maurey's webmaster.

France Darnell runs a superb site on Heston, the screencaps from his movies have to be seen to be believed, and she looked in a few recent French newspapers and confirmed that there was a small family obituary for Nicole. France Darnell wrote back to me stating that Nicole was cremated on 17 March - coincidentally Charlton Heston's wedding anniversary - which is a day I always celebrate because I'm Irish. From now on I will always raise a glass of Guinness on St. Paddy's Day in memory of the two stars from my favourite movie. Here is a little tribute that Madame Darnell posted after I contacted her with the sad news.

Fabienne Boullonnois is not only Nicole Maurey's webmaster but a very wonderful friend who cared for Nicole in her final months. I can personally vouch that Fabienne is a lovely lady, she made a round trip of 140 miles in her car to pick me up at my Paris hotel and drove me to Nicole's house at Le Chesnay to interview her. Here is Fabienne's brief email reply to me-

"Yes James, sorry to confirm this sad news. Nicole died on friday the 11th of March, after few months suffering from a lung cancer. I spent last summer taking care of her in Burgundy in my father's house and she was already very weak.
She died in Versailles in a house called Diaconesses where they take care of people at the end of their lives...
Only her nephew from New York turned up for the funeral, she had no other family in France.
I will update her website one of these days...
Best regards,
Fabienne"

Yes, hob, it was a wonderful gesture by Nicole to give me her file on SECRET OF THE INCAS. I nearly blew a fuse with excitement when she got it out and I saw all those beautiful glossy stills. "Here you are James, it is yours - I know you will look after it for me!"

I took the liberty of adding Nicole's name to the "In Memorial" [sic] thread on the IMDb Classic Film Board. I wrote a couple of paragraphs in tribute. Hope it's suitable.

Here's the link to the obituary I wrote on the CFB:

Flattered and honored to do so, James.

Nicole Maurey, the refined, red-headed French actress who appeared in a number of Hollywood films of the 50s, died March 11, 2016.

Although someone posted her death date on her IMDb site, so far no formal word of her passing has been noted elsewhere. However, it's been confirmed by friends in Britain and France, including the woman who helped nurse her in her final days. Sadly, the only person in attendance at her funeral was a nephew living in New York; she had no other family remaining in France.

Maurey had appeared in a few French films, beginning with her debut in Blondine in 1945 and including such films as Napoléon (1955), when she was "discovered" by Bing Cosby, who cast her in his 1953 film Little Boy Lost, shot in France. Thereafter she went to America and appeared in a number of English-language films, in the US and Britain. Probably her two best-known movies are Secret of the Incas (1954) with Charlton Heston, and The Day of the Triffids (1962) with Howard Keel. Her other US and UK films include The Constant Husband, The Bold and the Brave, The Weapon, Rogue's Yarn, Me and the Colonel, The Scapegoat, The Jayhawkers, The House of the Seven Hawks, High Time, His and Hers, Don't Bother to Knock (1961 UK film, not the 1952 Marilyn Monroe picture) and The Very Edge. She returned to France in the early 60s and appeared in a few more films, the most famous being her final screen role, Chanel Solitaire (1981). Maurey also made many appearances on television in the US and France. She retired in the late 80s.

Besides Crosby, Heston and Keel, Miss Maurey also starred opposite such stars as Mickey Rooney, Robert Taylor, Rex Harrison, Jeff Chandler, Fess Parker, Curt Jûrgens, Robert Young, Wendell Corey and Alec Guinness.

Nicole Maurey's birth date has always been given as December 20, 1925, which would have made her 90 at her death. However, a few years ago she told a British interviewer that her actual birth year was 1926, making her 89. Presumably the truth be be sorted out when proper newspaper obituaries of her surface.

A gracious lady of considerable charm and class. Rest in peace.

I'll add the note I posted in reply to you on the Classic Film Board, James: namely, that you are the British interviewer who elicited the information from Miss Maurey that she was born in 1926, not 1925, in your excellent report of your meeting with her in Paris.

Thank you for your kind remarks, I loved that day with Nicole in France.

Regarding your private message, you certainly have a very interesting hobby Brock, I might actually buy one of those Harry Steeele watches now!
I looked through my photo files on SECRET OF THE INCAS and there isn't one of Chuck wearing a watch behind the scenes. The only person who wears a watch in the film is Nicole Maurey. I wonder if you can identify the make?

Hi there James

Thanks for looking! I guess Chuck wasn't one for wearing a watch all the time. I do, as I feel naked if I don't! He does wear one in The Omega Man (1973) which looks like a typical gold or gold-plated Swiss watch of the 60's and early 70's.

Regarding Nicole Maurey's watch in SOTI, you'd have to send me a close-up scan of the best picture you have of it, as ladies' watches are so small and thus even more difficult to identify. Funny how she is the only one wearing one, as one would think she'd have to hock it somewhere along the way on nher hazardous trip from Romania to Machu Picchu!

I keep reading nonsense that Charlton Heston wore a watch in BEN-HUR and THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, which is ridiculous, but the legend seems to re-occur every time some critic slates those two epic classics.

If anyone could spot Chuck wearing a watch, it should be you, Brock, but I bet you can't!
