what kind of car was that?
The movie was a great advertisement for that workhorse!! The hood folding over where the radiator would normally be was interesting, too.

shareThe car was a 1953 Mercury Monterey. It should have had third billing!
shareI used to be able to tell a car from the 1950's by it's taillights at night. I could tell whether it was a Ford or Chevy and what year it was made. I see I am slipping now. I thought this was a 52 Mercury. I have always liked the looks of this model especially the way the taillights sloped.
I just now watched this movie on TCM. I loved the sound of that cars engine. Even idling it sounded like it had lots of power. Of course they may have enhanced the sound during editing if they did they did a good job of it.
Those early 50s Mercs had a great throaty rumble when idling. Nothing like it.
The 52 and 53 Mercurys look similar. The grill is easier to distinguish than the taillights, I think. I also like the sloping taillights.
This is a good car-spotting movie. You may enjoy the Internet Movie Cars Database:

If you look closley during the steep uphill climb the 53 Mercury is changed to a 53 Lincoln. That Mercury with it's 255 V8 flathead couldn't pull that weight so the Lincoln was substituded because of it's modern overhead, larger more powerful V8. The cars had simular lines so most people except gearheads missed it.
