Any information of the backstory of the characters?

I have seen this movie thousands of times. I was always wondering, what exactly does Nicky do for a living that they move a lot? Was it ever explained? Also, was it ever mentioned where Nicky and Tessy were staying at? I figured it was probably her mother's house but once again, not mentioned. Does the book give any backstory?

It's not really pertinent to the films' story. You just accept the fact that they have money somehow, or at least enough to pay for the car and trailer.

He works on large engineering/construction projects and, thus, moves to wherever the next job is. She first saw him at the unveiling of one such project.

Yes, but not much of one. He parks the trailer on a jack in a rainstorm and doesn't expect a mudslide.
