The High and the Mighty will be released in 2004

Variety and writer Michael Fleming have confirmed that "The High and the Mighty" will be released to the home video market in 2004. "Island in the Sky" will also be issued. Cinetech will digitally remaster both films and Chace Productions will convert the 4 track stereo to Dolby 5.1 surround. I imagine that these releases will be on Warner Bros label.

Do you know if it will be available for rent at Hollywood Video or Blockbusters or will it only be available for purchase and if so from where. Also, do you know when in 2004 so I can be on the lookout for it. Thanks! BOB WILKINSON

It should be available for rent. As far as release date, I am guessing that it will be later in 2004 probably between the holidays. The exact 50 year release date has already come and gone (February or March?).

I understand The High and Mighty was initially released on July,3 1954...maybe a 50th anniversary release? I also heard the original print suffered severe water damage and they were having problems with restoration - cinetex has completed the work. However, no indication of a WB release this year - maybe another distributor?

I have been told that it would be released "this year" since 1999. But it never happens. Now there are numerous copies being sold on ebay. I couldn't figure how they got a copy, so I ordered one. It was copied from a TV station that ran it. The call letters from the station came up on it was how I found out how they got it. But how did the TV station get a copy. I have been told different reasons as to why it hasn't been released. Most of them had to do with legalities between the producers, directors and Wayne's family. But, if you want a copy badly, buy one from ebay.

Regarding TV copies, it played frequently in the 60s and early 70s on regular channels, then disappeared for a while, until HBO showed it one time in the early 80s. Hasn't been shown anywhere since then.

I am sooooo glad, happy, surprised, but happy--yes. Dp you know when exactly it will be released? Also, how does one go about purchasing "The High and the Might" and "Island in the Sky."?

According to davisdvd.com, Paramount will be releasing "The High and the Mighty" on DVD (along with several other John Wayne films) in May 2005.

reply

You are correct. The newly restored film will be released in Spring 2005 by Paramount. In fact Paramount has entered a package deal to released several Wayne produced films.

I stand corrected on my previous posting about the film's release this year.

New release date for "The High And The Mighty" & "Island In The Sky" will be August 2nd. 2005.

The word now is that The High and the Mighty, along with Hondo, Island and the Sky and McLintock will not be released by Paramount until May 2005. This is from Scott Hettrick at Video Business mag, 9/13/04, edition.

reply

McLintock was released in 1993. I bought it along with Quiet Man from Critics Choice.

True. That's when they were fighting whether or not McLintock was in the public domain or not. It was ruled in favor of Batjac productions (Wayne's former company) in the mid-90s and all outstanding stock was supposed to be destroyed. Any way, with Paramount you can rest assured that it will be a pristine copy - just like fresh from production again!

Has the High and the Mighty been released?

reply

Don't know if it's out- but AMC is showing it on 17 July. Finally- last time I saw it was as a squirt (around '62?) and I still recall this as not being your average Duke Wayne fare- it shows he could act his ass off. Emotional and moving, even to my young mind at the time. I can't wait to see it again......for the first time in adulthood.

Hello,

I have jusr 'pre-ordered' my copies of 'High and the Mighty' and 'Island in the Sky' from Amazon.com, and the release date is August 2, 2005. I just caught the last hour of THATM on AMC for their premier weekend. All I can say is WOW! They have really cleaned up and made the movie 'new' again. What ever damage was done to the original master must have been fixed. Anyway.....WOW!
