"The High and the Mighty" will be shown with "Island in the Sky" on July 16th and 17th on AMC, at 8pm. This will be approximatly 2 weeks before the movie is released on DVD. Hpefully, they will not be "compressed for viewing time" or "edited for content."
I'd rather have TCM show the movie - AMC went from one of the best movie channels to one of the worst, with their commercials and ridiculous original programming. TNT is better than AMC though.
I totally agree! Unfortunately for me, I don't get TCM, so I'm (somewhat) content that at least I'll get to see this and "Island In The Sky" for the first time. I wrote AMC and took them to task for changing, but they just gave me (figurative) lip service.
A person's better off just holding out for the DVD. For one thing you can watch the film without commercial interruptions every 5 minutes. Plus you can see it its original CinemaScope format, the way it was meant to be seen. Hopefully Paramount will put it out in that format since that's the way a movie like that should be seen.
Any idea if it's going to be in pan and scan or widescreen? I'm going to assume pan and scan since I can't find anything on the AMC website mentioning that it's going to be shown in widescreen. I guess that means that I'll be waiting for the DVD to come out before I see the film.
Its now 4:42, pdt, the movie starts in just minutes. I will be first in line at Best Buy on August 2, but I just have to see at least a few minutes of it on AMC. But I won't come back after a commercial.....
...after reading all these comments, I hope it is worth the wait. I should be doing work work for Monday, but I will try to watch. AMC has ALOT of commercials, but I really enjoyed "Island In the Sky", so hopefully this will be OK. The director is the same, Will Wellman, I think. The previews had alot of blonde bimbo like ladies screaming, so I pray there is substance. "Island" was an exercise in topnotch acting and direction even tho I didnt understand the very last scene. If you saw it, without giving away anything, why didn't the planes land and pick them up at the end? Strange.
Well, I saw the begining, and the end. This was the restored version, and it looked great. The last time I saw it this clear was at the Studio Theater on Ventura Blvd, in 1955. I can't wait for the dvd, and all the extras. Finally!
I think because the planes did not have skis to land in the snow. They were search planes and they dropped food and blankets. I hope they made note of their location. BTW- wasn't there a bad storm coming in 36 hrs?
On TH&TM- I expected Robert Stack to say- 'I picked a bad week to stop smoking' (from Airplane- actually the Lloyd Bridges character)
The film looks pristine. The restorers have done an excellent job of restoring the color, contrast, and also the sound to the film.
I do wish, however, that AMC didn't stop seemingly every 15 minutes for another commercial break. Also AMC cut off the chorus at the end.
I'm anxiously awaiting the 2 weeks till the DVD comes out. I want to see the extras Paramount has added to the release, and also to see the film without commercials.
One of posters in the "Just a bad movie" topic said the scene where the plane just clears the radio range towers was cut. Another one said the scene where the plane passes low over Chinatown was cut. A third one said some of the dramatic music during the landing was cut.
1. When John Wayne puts on his hat and readies himself before telling the passengers about the problem
2. Before takeoff when the stewardess speaks to the passengers
I don't ever recall the radio tower scene (except in dialog "600 foot radio tower around here"), the Cinatown scene, or the chorus (although the chorus is on the soundtrack album).
