The Seats???

When they are trying to throw things out of the plane to lessen the weight why dont they unfasten the seats and start getting rid of them??? That is what I would do, I know that they need to be in them when they crash , but getting rid of all that weight may increase the fuel mileage enough to not have to crash. I would have at least gotten rid of the empty seats.

I'm just guessing here, so don't shoot me(pardon the "gun pun":). Anyhow, I figure there are probably several reasons, but who knows.

Firstly, would have taken a lot of time-real time AND movie time. Secondly, I don't know about back then, but now, we all know that the seats can be used as flotation devices-don't know if that was even a consideration.

Lastly, either they didn't even THINK about that or.....lol!

I had wondered the same exact thing, camille!:)

To camiller8302: A rather interesting point. My question is, would the passengers and crew have access to the necessary tools to remove these seats?

reply

You would think that, on an older plane especially, the seats could be removed by loosening some bolts about the same way you remove the seats in a car or truck. So surely they would have a simple toolbox on the plane or a few tools at least just for good measure.

Actually. on older airplanes, things were built for a different standard...the era of big, brawny everything, and we'll just make the engines more powerful was still in, and the seat were probably bolted on like an AA machine gun on a Sherman tank.

Not gonna happen in the movie, anyway.

No matter where you go, there you are!

There's a couple of passengers they could have thrown out that would have made the load lighter. Might have made the movie shorter too.

I love this movie but it is way too talkie and way too long. But there's never been a better music score.

reply

Actually, I think a better music score was for The Big Country.

Sure they could have done that as there were extra seats. But they would not for two reasons-
1. The door opened outward, while they could get suitcases and such out those seats were likely one big assembly for two people and would have been very difficult to get through that opening.
2. Notice where the door nis on the aircraft- several feet up from the tail. If you were co pilot would you want something that big and likely heavy to impact and possibly damage the tail/and or control surfaces? The baggage went under the tail, imagine how bad it would be if they damaged the rudder. Dan did the right thing!
