Help us with the campaign to get "The High and the Mighty" on DVD!

Greetings all!
I am trying to get Warner Bros. to listen to us in our request that
they do someting to release the movie, "The High and the Mighty" on
DVD. Therefore, I would like to post a link to the Warner Bros.
message board. This other board will not take away from this one,
rather it's to help a personal little campaign I'm trying to get
going for all John Wayne fans. It's the Warner Bros. message board
and I have a topic, "We request the movie "The High and the Mighty"
to be release on DVD! I'm not sure what good it will do, but at
least if WB looks at it, they will know how we feel and they might
try to get the movie released!

Here is the link to the Warner Bros. message board topic that I
posted on their website. Please copy and paste the link below.

http://boards.warnerbros.com/web/wbus/messages.jsp?
topic=36778892&board=Warner+Home+Video+Club&so=a"

I would greatly appreaciate your support, and feel free to post the
link to any other JW discussions you might know of. This is a
classic John Wayne movie that I know all of us would like to have in
our collection.

Just to let everyone know ... I was at the World War II Aviation Museum in Camarillo, California last week. There was a company filming there using the airplane called "China Doll". I asked what was the name of the movie and they replied that they were filming an extra feature to be added to the DVD "The High and the Mighty".

Here it is May 2005 and it's still not out? DJ

There has been some release news on this movie at the first of the year. It was announced for release on DVD on 5/05, alomg with "Hondo", "Island in the Sky", and an updated "McLintock", all by Paramount instead on Warner Bros. But nothing else has been heard of.

There have been announcements on the release of "The Train Robbers", "Blood Alley", "Tall in the Saddle", and "McQ" also on DVD in 05/05 of this year. Sofar it looks like the latter will be the better bet. I will keep this site posted if I find out anything else!

The High and the Mighty to Be Released on DVD!

More people ask me about The High and the Mighty, the seldom-seen 1954 film starring John Wayne as an airline pilot, than any other classic movie. Now, Variety has reported that, according to Gretchen Wayne, Michael Wayne's widow and president of Batjac Productions, Inc., the movie is due to be released on DVD in May, 2005. The original of the film was damaged, and restorations are still going on, so stay tuned!

I hope they release the move The High and The Mighty on DVD. My sister and I saw this movie in Omaha, NE in 1954. It was great. I would love to have a copy of it. I think John Wayne was the greatest and the music is out of this world!! TMH March 14, 2005

I wonder if the problem isn't with the author Gann, Three of his books have not been released on DVD or Video, Fate is the Hunter(1965) Island in the Sky(1953) all good movies but so far not released. I understand that Gann was unhappy with the finished product on Fate is the Hunter. I had no idea that The High and the Mighty had not been released. Hope it is soon.

Not in this case, Ernest K. Gann, gave his rights to John Wayne for the film fully and without any strings attached. Plus he was VERY HAPPY with how the film turned out and all of the positive press that it gained (especially in the New York Times). So in this particular case that is not the cause of the delay.

The delay is that there exists no "perfect print" of the film. Only very bad 16mm prints. So they are having to take a lot of them from different sources and remaster them into the original form. Then digitally clean up the film and the soundtrack. Then they plan on a TON of extras. This is why this project has taken nearly two years since the DVD was first announced, to come to light. So hopefully the May 2005 release date for the DVD will still happen. But if not, it is because the Wayne Family wants it to be "perfect" since even John Wayne considered this one of his favorite films, and one that meant a lot to him and to his family.

Imagine all of the work that is involved in having just scratchy and deteriorated versions of the film and having to do all that work to blow up the print to 35mm and then to clean it up digitally, and that is all before the soundtrack is even touched. So it is a LOT of work. But I will be the first in line to buy it. I watch amazon.com weekly for a pre-sale notice, as soon as it goes on pre-sale I will be one of the first to order a copy. Especially since this is my favorite film of all time.

One of my fondest memories as a young boy in 1954 was when my Grandmother took me to New York City (we lived in suburban Philadelphia at the time) to see the Broadway premier of The High and the Mighty. I have been waiting YEARS for it to come out on DVD, along with Island in the Sky. If you do find it has been released, I want to be the second person in line to buy one! I have a "bootleg" copy on VHS that was released through Medallion Productions but it is rather dark and hard to see in places. Having that copy only makes me long all the more for the DVD!
