I saw the movie yesterday (again) on TV in the Netherlands. In the version I saw the inspector tells Margot and Mark that the key fits the apartment of Swann's GIRLFRIEND. I realy thought I understood the story (which took a heavy toll on my mind) until then (with the key fitting Swann's apartment), but when he said "the apartment of Swann's GIRLFRIEND" I felt totally lost.
Anyone?
That Swann guy is what in Dutch is called an "Uitvreter" (= scrounger, parasite, leach), he doesn't have a job nor a living space of his own, he lives off the wealth of his "girlfriends" and hops from woman to woman. The key in his pocket was the latch key to the apartment of the woman with whom he was living at that moment.
