Hubbard dropping his own key

I once read that Hubbard dropped his own key on the floor to test Tony. But I never quite understood this. Can anyone enlighten me?

He did it to trip him up..He knew Tony's story was bogus..funny thing Tony knew it too but went along with it anyway.
