How come the humans aren't affected by the sleeping drug?

Right, the humans in Creature from the Black Lagoon use a kind of sleeping-drug to try and disable and deal with The Creature, but yet they don't seem to be affected when they're in the water at the same time.

Cinematic suspension of disbelief and fanboy/fangirl love of this awesome movie aside, does anyone have any explanation as to why the main characters are seemingly immune to the effects of the drug when The Creature and the fish in the lagoon aren't?
