The Creature and Marilyn Monroe

Thius should also be in the trivia section - in The Seven Year Itch, Monroe and Tom Ewell have just left a thetare showing The Creature From The Black Lagoon in the scene where she stands over the subway grate.

Pretty good. I didn't know that...

Also in a fantasy sequence when Tom Ewell fears getting caught with the beautiful young neighbor MM, he imagines Marilyn doing her "Dazzle Dent" toothpaste commercial. In his imagination, Marilyn breaks character as she tries to warn other women about the "lecherous" Tom Ewell, and calls him "The Creature From the Black Lagoon".

As MM & Tom Ewell leave the theater where they have just watched Creature, she makes a comment about feeling sorry for the creature. She was so ahead of her time.

How was she "ahead of her time" (one of the most overused phrases)? People had been feeling sorry for monsters for many decades. What about King Kong? People were especially sympathetic toward him even after he had left a path of destruction and murdered people. I'm certain also that many people were sympathetic toward the Frankenstein Monster. That's simply human nature.

So, Marilyn's character's sympathy was not groundbreaking in any way.

Why DO people persist with "ahead of their/his/her time" statements? To me, it insults the time these are from. They are OF their time, not ahead of it! It's a pet peeve of mine, as people far too often apply it to so many things. Allow that the time period was quite capable of whatever was produced. Don't act as if it's aberrant!

I completely agree, the "ahead of their time" phrase is irritating.

reply

Hooray! This passed "cheesey" for my most irritating phrase. To me, it robs whatever time period of something it should be noted for. It steals the praise that rightfully belongs to that time, which obviously should be credited for more than people obviously expected.

After all, I wouldn't say that Fredric March was ahead of his time because he seemed more like some Method actors than the usual stage-experienced thespian. He simply was a person who was gifted in his ability to merge with characters. Perhaps it was March and others with a similar style who inspired the idea of "Method acting". Does that make sense?

I've encountered people who didn't seem to understand my dislike of this, so it's nice to hear from someone who does "get" that pet peeve.

You know my pet peeve? People who carp about their pet peeves and attack anyone's comments as if they are sitting on a throne in perpetual judgement. Tedious and boring.

reply

You do know that there are people out there whose pet peeve are people whose pet peeve are people that carp about their pet peeves?

nice try but no cigar, troll

furthermore she had to say it because it was written in a script,
for that you cant refer to an actress and her personality.

if he/she would have been right
the writer of the script would have been ahead of his time
(though he wasnt)

I remembered that too when I was watching the movie last night. The subway grate scene was filmed on September 15 1954.
