When I was Eight...

My father took me to see "The Caine Mutiny" while we were vacationing in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The drive-in over in Norfolk was a great place to see this blockbuster film. Starring Humphrey Bogart as Lt. Cmdr. Phillip Francis Queeg, Van Johnson as Lt. Steve Maryk, Fred MacMurray as Lt. Tom Keefer, Jose Ferrer as Lt. Barney Greenwald and Robert Francis as Ens. Willie Keith this film shines because of the actors who brought it to life. They are all excellent in their roles and Jose Ferrer almost steals the show as Lt. Barney Greenwald, the attorney for the defense in this drama. The action in this movie revolves around one man, the ships captain. As the story unfolds, Cmdr. Queeg's officers suspect that he is not mentally fit. Watch the "strawberry incident" and the search for a key that never existed. See the way Queeg handles himself when he cuts his own tow-line after his orders to the crew are obeyed. Get into his obsessions, his frenzied existence and his cowardly actions as he "protects" the crews that are depending upon him and his ship to give them cover as they land on the beach. Witness the storm which gives rise to mutiny and how close the Caine comes to disaster. His officers, mainly Steve Maryk (Van Johnson), now must come to terms with the issue that their captain is mentally unfit for command. As the trial of the officers responsible for the mutiny gets underway, watch Jose Ferrer, as Lt. Barney Greenwald, tear Cmdr. Queeg apart as he defends the members of the crew and his drunken rant to them after he wins the case. This is a must see film for all the right reasons.
