Help me find a similar film... court martial at sea.
Hi all.
I need to find the name of a film that has some similarities to this one. The similarity is that there is a navy trial/court martial about an incident on board a boat! I'd love to see it again but I can't remember what it's called!!
I'm pretty sure its a British film, and from the 1940s or 50s.
The plot concerns a young sailor who is very decent and likeable. He transfers from one ship to another. There, he is involved in an incident where someone dies, and there is a court-martial on board, where three senior officers meet below deck to decide if he should be hanged or not. They all like the young guy very much and have a lot of sympathy for him, but there is this very long trial scene where they realise they have to apply the law. I think one of them tries to resign from the trial, but the lead officer won't let him.
The other thing I remember is that the young sailor has a sort of gentle, ethereal quality, and there is a suggestion that he is a Christ-like figure. (This is never stated in the movie, but I remember it was in a lot of the commentary).
Anyway. I would love to see this again. I remember in particular the long trial scene, where the three officers were wrestling with this moral dilemma. That scene seemed to last a long time, but it was mesmerising - beautifully acted, and very moving.
Can anyone help??
