What the hell was DeVriess wearing?

At the very beginning, when Keith meets DeVriess, it looks like ht's been shot in the stomach and is wearing a huge bandage to cover his wound - or his gut. What the hell is that thing?

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

The Captain was wearing a bath towel around his waist, I would say that he was on his way back from taking a shower when one of the ship's officers requested his attention to some urgent business so he dealt with it immediately before bothering to get dressed.

In Herman Wouk's novel instances are described of officers being woken up in the middle of the night to deal with an important matter and they just get up and deal with it in their nightwear or in the nude without bothering to pull their trousers on.

In the book, DeVriess is actually nude -he's on his way to the shower- when he meets Keith. Willie is hesitant about saluting as he was taught he should never salute a superior who's uncovered (i.e. not wearing a hat), and he can't think of how the captain could be any more uncovered.

It looked like a back support. Maybe he had a back injury.
