Bergman looked matronly

I thought the same thing, namely that Bergman's looks changed. But I would say she looked less Hollywood glam and more earthy and mature. She didn't have that innocent glow we were used to seeing Hollywood shine in her eyes. None of this is a criticism on Hollywood, Bergman, or Rossolini. It was, to me, just a different phase in Bergman's acting career. She still was beautiful, there was no mistaking that. But now she was attacking roles that required being more in tune with everyday people and the hopes and dreams they have and have to give up. If she looked matronly, look at your mother, sister or girlfriend. Do they dress more like Bergman in Casablanca or Journey to Italy? To me, Bergman's change was endearing.

I can't comment on her looks in the Italisn films she made with her husband, but in Journey to Italy her matronly look was appropriate to her character, who is, in effect, mummified.

Why do you refuse to remember me?

Her hair is shorter, her dresses longer, a la 50s fashion. But if you look at her face from any angle, she's even more lovely than she was in Casablanca. What a beautiful woman!
