Tokyo Story or Ikiru

I just finished my first viewing of Tokyo Story (also my first Ozu film)and I have to admit it was at first hard to get into but halfway through the movie I got the taste of it. Anyway I couldn't help to notice some similarities in relation to the indifferent nature of the characters in the film to Kurosawa's "Ikiru". Both films were made around the same time. Personally I liked Ikiru better, what do you think?

reply

Ikiru by far. Tokyo Story is just too plain and bland.

Both are great movies. Ikiru is more my cup of tea.

Tokyo Story any day

Tokyo. story. Ozu films touched me like no others. There are at least a dozen Japanese Autuers that are world class, and Ozu and Naruse are my favorites. I think I have watched over 70 films from these two masters combined.

Ikiru !
Ikiru 9/10.
Tokyo Story a solid 7/10.

Tokyo Story, one of the best movies ever made.

I don't think Ikiru holds a candle to Tokyo Story. It's a very good film, but Tokyo Story is IMO the greatest film ever made.

reply

Ikiru. It's better looking, less predictable, and generally smarter. Tokyo Story seems horribly dated. I mean it's just a matter of modern life that people no longer live in villages with their extended families, and that old people live so goddamn long nowadays that someone has to pay all the nursing home/hospice care bills--hence everyone compelled to constantly have to work. I'm sure it more profound when it came out, but I can't help but shrug my shoulders.
