Brilliant!!!! More movies like this???

I can think of Unforgiven and maybe The Gunfighter

If I took the time to make up a list for you, would you make an effort to check them out, or, would I be wasting my time?

I love this movie so much.

I can tell you that one movie that I also love that gives me a similar feeling is The Hanging Tree with Gary Cooper.

Haven't seen it. I'll check it out

"Tension At Table Rock" 1956 is probably the first overt ripoff of "Shane"; Richard Egan plays the gunfighter who changes his name to live down his past, Cameron Mitchell is a Sheriff who's become a coward, Dorothy Malone plays his sexually frustrated wife who goes nuts over Egan, and DeForest Kelly plays the slick gunfighter hired to kill the sheriff, and ironically is a friend of Richard Eagan. There's even a little boy who's the nephew of Cameron Mitchell who idolizes Egan's character.

It's well acted, but not as well as "Shane", it's clearly a lower budget version of Shane, not as well directed or photographed, and there's no hauntingly memorable score.

"Pale Rider" with Clint Eastwood was another "Shane" ripoff.

I'm a bit confused, sorry. Would you recommend watching the movies you described?

reply

If you're expecting the quality of Shane, then no. But a movie doesn't have to be of the caliber of Shane to be worthwhile. Speaking for myself, I like watching movies that borrow heavily from others or are outright remakes, even if they are inferior.

Another good example is the Bogie/Bacall "To Have And Have Not" has been remade at least twice, one of them, the very low budget "The Gun Runners" starring Audie Murphy in the Bogie role. It's not as good as the original, but still worthwhile.

Now if you're looking for elegaic westerns, I'd recommend "Ride The High Country" and "The Searchers". Maybe even "Lonely Are The Brave".

Much clearer now, thank you very much. I'll sure check your latter recommendations.

The movie that best develops the theme of the shooter who protects or reunites families but in the end fails in his attempt to find a love and a place in society is probably Ford´s "The Searchers". A similar themes is present also in "The Magnificent Seven".

Yes. And, also, in Cimarron.
