Ryker was played by the classic 'baddie' Emile Meyer in the role of his life. He is like an embodiment of the wild land and he forces us to understand his loyalty to the free range cattle life of the past and to even sympathize at times. His wild white hair and beard make him almost unrecognizable but are perfect for him. As so many great directors understood, this kind of movie is only as good as your bad man and Ryker is the character at the center of the movie. His intensity is really 'over the top' and doesn't hold anything back.

He was really scary as the cop in Burt Lancaster's pocket in The Sweet Smell of Success, too!

He was great here. He was also good as Father Dupree in Paths of Glory.
