filming locations
Does anyone know if this was filmed in New York, Hollywood, or both? Thanks.
shareI am a Chicagoan, not a New Yorker (although I have been to NYC several times), so I can't identify the filming locations in the movie. (I think there was one outside shot of the main NY Public Library - I have been there.) But while perhaps interior shots were filmed in a studio (in Hollywood?), many of the scenes certainly look as though they were filmed on location, and I assume in NYC (and definitely not on the West Coast). Those scenes in the movie made it very special to me.
shareSam Fuller, the director, said in a special feature of the DVD of this movie that most scenes were done in Los Angeles so that he could control all aspects of filming. He said shutting down a NYC subway station would not have been considered. As an easterner, he chose buildings in Los Angeles that had Roman columns outside that are characteristic of Manhattan. Interiors of LA buildings were also used.
He said the subway scenes were all done on sound stages at Fox on the West Coast. The one scene of only a subway train roaring thru the dark was obviously done in New York. It would also have been easy to grab a single shot of the exterior of the actual library in Manhattan.
