Jean Peters pronounces this like the city in Texas instead of the way the New York street is pronounced, HOW-ston. That has always bugged me.

shareI agree, but I'm wondering if that was just typical of the era. Some words were pronounced differently (i.e. accent on different syllables) years ago.
shareFor posterity's sake, Houston Street was one of the original streets of New Amsterdam. It's been pronounced How ston since the 1600's, my understanding is it's the Dutch pronounciation. Being a born Brooklynite, I pronounced it Hew ston the first time I took a subway ride by myself in my early teens. I still blush about that 50 years later. As far as I know, in NYC it has always been and will always be How ston.
